iPads for Everyone!

29 March 2011 One Comment

It’s Official!
St. Anne’s-Belfield School announced today that all faculty will receive iPad2′s before the end of the school year. During closing faculty meetings, all faculty will receive introductory training and will then be asked to get comfortable with them & to explore ways in which the iPad can enhance teaching and learning in their classroom. This website will provide resources to help do that!

Next school year, each division will share a cart of 20 iPads for student use. Of course, at any time a teacher can use their own iPad for demonstration purposes, simply by hooking it to their overhead projector.

How exciting to see St. Anne’s Belfield take a major step forward with iPads. I was part of earliest phase of technology at St. Anne’s back in 1973-75 when I graduated college and started my teaching career. Back then, Dave Allen was the computer teacher and we used a Digital Teletype to UVA to write programs in BASIC. Our St. Anne’s students in grades 9-12 had an elective when they could learn to program. One of them, Francois Lang, taught the computer to write random haiku poetry. What Francois created was so outstanding that he published it in a magazine.

I urge all of you at St. Anne’s to embrace teacher training and professional development as more than a token and one shot deal. There are dozens of schools out there who are embarking on the iPad journey and not all all of them are going to be successful. Teacher training and support can come from any of several methods:
Plan A: traditional training from Amy Brudin or “outside experts”
Plan B: teachers who get excited and teach each other
Plan C: teachers who are comfortable allowing the kids to teach them since kids can be so savvy and resourceful
Obviously, you need a mix of the three but I am always advocating Plan B and Plan C which can even be formalized!

    Good luck everyone,
I drove back to Charlottesville in the Summer of 2010 for the first time in 35 years and put some pictures on my blog at http://www.summercore.com/SBergen.html#virginia
